È arrivato il momento di rimettere il Sudafrica 🇿🇦 nello zaino.

Tra poche settimane tornerò in Sudafrica, alla ricerca di nuovi incontri e nuove fotografie.

Questa fotografia ritrae una balena franca australe (Eubalaena australis), osservata e fotografata direttamente dalla spiaggia durante il mio primo viaggio. È uno di quegli incontri che non si dimenticano facilmente e che mi ricordano perché il Sudafrica è una destinazione così speciale per chi ama la fotografia naturalistica.

Prima di partire di nuovo, ho deciso di riaprire quell’archivio e condividere con voi gli scatti, i luoghi e i preparativi che mi accompagneranno verso una nuova avventura.

Da oggi inizierà un percorso che ci porterà fino alla partenza. Rivivremo insieme alcuni dei momenti più significativi del mio primo viaggio, parleremo dei luoghi che visiterò, delle specie che spero di incontrare e di tutto ciò che c’è dietro l’organizzazione di un viaggio fotografico.

In a few weeks, I’ll be returning to South Africa, in search of new encounters and new photographs.

This photograph depicts a southern right whale (Eubalaena australis), observed and photographed directly from the beach during my first trip. It’s one of those unforgettable encounters that reminds me why South Africa is such a special destination for nature photography enthusiasts.

Before leaving again, I’ve decided to reopen that archive and share with you the shots, places, and preparations that will accompany me on this new adventure.

From today, a journey begins that will lead us all the way to our departure. We’ll relive some of the most significant moments of my first trip together, discuss the places I’ll visit, the species I hope to encounter, and everything that goes into organizing a photography trip.

Tra le specie più iconiche del Delta del Danubio c’è la ghiandaia marina (Coracias garrulus), riconoscibile per il suo straordinario piumaggio dai toni turchesi e blu.

Osservarla posata tra i rami significa coglierla nel suo ambiente naturale, in un ecosistema che ospita una delle più ricche biodiversità d’Europa e che continua a sorprendere a ogni uscita sul campo.

Con questa immagine si conclude il racconto del mio viaggio nel Delta del Danubio. Ma questo luogo ha ancora molto da raccontare, e ci torneremo con nuove immagini dedicate a uno degli ecosistemi più affascinanti del continente.

-🇬🇧 Among the most iconic species of the Danube Delta is the European roller (Coracias garrulus), recognizable by its extraordinary turquoise and blue plumage.

Observing it perched among the branches means capturing it in its natural habitat, in an ecosystem that hosts one of the richest biodiversity in Europe and continues to surprise with every field trip.

This image concludes the story of my trip to the Danube Delta. But this place still has much to tell, and we’ll return with new images dedicated to one of the continent’s most fascinating ecosystems.

La giornata inizia prima dell’alba nel Delta del D

La giornata inizia prima dell’alba nel Delta del Danubio. A Mila 23 il silenzio è ancora padrone dei canali, interrotto soltanto dal rumore della barca che scivola lentamente sull’acqua.

Poi, poco alla volta, il Delta del Danubio si sveglia. Le prime luci colorano il cielo, i richiami degli uccelli riempiono l’aria e la natura riprende il suo ritmo dopo la quiete della notte.

I pellicani bianchi (Pelecanus onocrotalus) attraversano l’orizzonte in formazione, mentre le nitticore (Nycticorax nycticorax) osservano immobili dalle rive. Ogni curva del canale regala una nuova sorpresa e ricorda quanto questo ecosistema sia vivo e straordinariamente ricco di biodiversità.

Sono momenti che durano pochi istanti, ma che raccontano l’essenza di questo luogo: una natura autentica, ancora capace di dettare i propri ritmi a chi ha la fortuna di attraversarla all’alba.

Then, little by little, the Danube Delta awakens. The first lights color the sky, the calls of birds fill the air, and nature resumes its rhythm after the stillness of the night.

White pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) cross the horizon in formation, while night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) watch motionless from the banks. Every bend in the canal offers a new surprise and a reminder of how vibrant and extraordinarily rich in biodiversity this ecosystem is.

These moments last only a few moments, but they capture the essence of this place: an authentic nature, still capable of dictating its own rhythms to those lucky enough to cross it at dawn.

Ci sono luoghi in cui la natura si lascia cercare.

Ci sono luoghi in cui la natura si lascia cercare. E poi ci sono luoghi come questo. Qui basta salire su una barca e lasciarsi trasportare tra canali, lagune e distese di canneti per sentirsi parte di qualcosa di più grande.

Nel Delta del Danubio i pellicani sono ovunque. Volteggiano sopra la testa, attraversano il cielo in formazione, planano sull’acqua e riempiono l’orizzonte di movimento. A volte sono così tanti che smetti persino di contarli e ti limiti ad osservare. Non servono capanni. Non servono appostamenti. C’è solo il Delta, immenso e selvaggio, che continua a seguire i propri ritmi. E tu sei lì, in silenzio, ad assistere a uno spettacolo che si ripete da migliaia di anni.

Forse è proprio questa la magia del Delta del Danubio: la sensazione di non essere il protagonista, ma semplicemente un ospite privilegiato in uno degli ecosistemi più straordinari d’Europa.

-🇬🇧 There are places where nature lets itself be sought. And then there are places like this. Here, all you have to do is hop on a boat and let yourself be carried through canals, lagoons, and reed beds to feel part of something greater.

In the Danube Delta, pelicans are everywhere. They circle overhead, cross the sky in formation, glide over the water, and fill the horizon with movement. Sometimes there are so many that you stop even counting them and simply observe. No need for hides. No need for lookouts. There is only the Delta, immense and wild, continuing to follow its own rhythms. And you are there, in silence, witnessing a spectacle that has been repeated for thousands of years.

Perhaps this is precisely the magic of the Danube Delta: the feeling of not being the protagonist, but simply a privileged guest in one of Europe’s most extraordinary ecosystems.

Nascosto tra i salici del Delta, è rimasto sulla riva per pochi secondi, immobile, osservando il lento passaggio della barca.

Uno sciacallo dorato (Canis aureus).

Un incontro breve, silenzioso e completamente inaspettato. Il tempo di alzare la fotocamera e realizzare appena cinque scatti prima che sparisse nuovamente nella vegetazione.

Nel Delta del Danubio la natura non segue programmi e non concede seconde possibilità.

E forse è proprio questo a rendere ogni incontro così speciale. 🌿📸🐾

Canali nascosti, foreste allagate, colonie di pellicani e una biodiversità che rende questo luogo unico nel suo genere.

Nei prossimi giorni seguirò il corso dell’acqua alla ricerca di storie da raccontare attraverso la fotografia, osservando la natura con rispetto, pazienza e curiosità.

Ci sono incontri che non fanno rumore, ma restano. A Ranthambore aspettavamo la tigre.

Gli occhi cercavano movimento tra gli alberi, le orecchie inseguivano ogni suono della foresta.
Poi, all’improvviso, lui.

Un pavone indiano (Pavo cristatus), immobile come un guardiano antico, con il blu intenso del collo e quella ruota di piume che sembrava dipinta a mano.

Non era solo bellezza. Era presenza.
 Ti sorprende, cambia prospettiva, ti obbliga a guardare meglio. E spesso, ciò che ricordi di più, non è quello che eri partito per cercare.

It wasn’t just beauty. It was presence.

It surprises you, changes your perspective, forces you to look more closely. And often, what you remember most is not what you set out to find.

La tigre non è solo un animale. È una presenza che si sente ancora prima di incontrarla.

Questo viaggio si è concentrato nel Parco Nazionale di Ranthambore, uno dei luoghi simbolo per incontrarla. Un territorio fatto di foresta secca, rovine e radure aperte, dove ogni uscita è un equilibrio tra attesa e possibilità.

La foresta cambia quando c’è. I suoni si fermano, gli sguardi si concentrano, ogni dettaglio inizia ad avere un senso diverso. 
Non la cerchi davvero in modo diretto. Impari a leggere: un movimento, un richiamo lontano, una traccia appena visibile. È un’attesa fatta di tentativi, errori e silenzi. Ore in cui non succede nulla, ma in realtà sta succedendo tutto.

Poi appare.

Nessuna scena costruita, nessuna garanzia.
 Solo pochi secondi reali in cui capisci subito chi comanda, chi osserva e chi è semplicemente di passaggio. Non serve inseguirla è lei che decide se mostrarsi, e per quanto tempo restare.

This journey focused on Ranthambore National Park, one of the iconic places to encounter it. A territory of dry forest, ruins, and open clearings, where every outing is a balance between anticipation and possibility.

The forest changes when it’s there. Sounds stop, glances focus, every detail begins to have a different meaning.
You don’t really look for it directly. You learn to read it: a movement, a distant call, a barely visible trace. It’s a wait made of trial, error, and silence. Hours in which nothing happens, but in reality, everything is happening.

Then it appears.

No staged scenes, no guarantees.
Just a few real seconds in which you immediately understand who’s in charge, who’s observing, and who’s simply passing by. There’s no point in chasing it; it decides whether to show itself, and how long to stay.

And it’s in that moment that you understand that this journey has only one protagonist.

Non serve entrare in una foresta per incontrare la natura.

A volte è lei che trova te.

A Ranthambore, lungo una strada qualunque, tra polvere e silenzio, un muro prende vita:
sguardi felini, corpi in movimento, un richiamo selvaggio che resta.

E intanto la vita scorre.
Un gesto semplice, quotidiano.
Una traiettoria che attraversa tutto.

E per un attimo, ogni cosa si allinea.

Se ti fermi a guardare, queste storie sono ovunque.

Il trekking è lento, impegnativo. La foresta decide cosa mostrarti. Poi, in alto, dove la luce si spezza…

Un lemure ventre rosso (Eulemur rubriventer), specie schiva e difficile da avvistare, che vive nascosta nella parte più alta della foresta.

Una delle 9 specie di lemuri osservate durante questo viaggio.

Ore di cammino per un attimo solo. Ma è per quell’attimo che sei lì.

Tra luce filtrata e silenzio, una femmina di indri (Indri indri) attraversa la foresta con il piccolo aggrappato al ventre.
Tra le chiome della foresta pluviale del Madagascar orientale osservo i suoi movimenti lenti e precisi.
 Nei primi mesi di vita il contatto con la madre è continuo: il cucciolo dipende da lei per ogni spostamento, per il nutrimento e per la protezione tra i rami più alti.

L’indri è tra i lemuri più minacciati del Madagascar e la sua sopravvivenza è strettamente legata alla conservazione della foresta primaria. Assistere a queste scene significa comprendere quanto sia fragile l’equilibrio che sostiene la specie.

Amid the canopies of the rainforest of eastern Madagascar, I observe her slow, precise movements.

In the first months of life, contact with her mother is constant: the baby depends on her for every move, for food, and for protection among the highest branches.

The indri is among the most threatened lemurs in Madagascar, and its survival is closely tied to the preservation of the primary forest. Witnessing these scenes helps us understand how fragile the balance that sustains the species is.

Camminavamo lentamente nella foresta, con lo sguar

Camminavamo lentamente nella foresta, con lo sguardo perso tra tronchi, muschi e luce filtrata.
 Per lunghi minuti non sembrava esserci nulla.Poi, all’improvviso, la corteccia ha preso vita. Un geco coda a foglia del genere Uroplatus, perfettamente immobile, fuso con l’albero che lo ospitava.
 In incontri così capisci quanto il mimetismo possa essere estremo… e quanto la fotografia naturalistica sia prima di tutto osservazione, pazienza e rispetto.
 -🇬🇧 We walked slowly through the forest, our gaze lost among the tree trunks, moss, and filtered light.

For long minutes, nothing seemed to be there. Then, suddenly, the bark came to life. A leaf-tailed gecko of the Uroplatus genus, perfectly still, fused with the tree that housed it.

In encounters like this, you understand how extreme camouflage can be... and how nature photography is, above all, observation, patience, and respect.

Per incontrarlo abbiamo camminato ore nella foresta. Poi, all’improvviso, tra i rami e la luce che filtrava dalla volta della foresta, il suo sguardo. Diretto. Silenzioso. Presente.

Il propiteco dal diadema (Propithecus diadema) si muove leggero tra gli alberi delle foreste pluviali dell’est del Madagascar, con salti lunghi e sospesi che sembrano appartenere a un altro tempo.
 Osservarlo così, da vicino, significa entrare per un istante nel fragile equilibrio di questo ecosistema. Endemico di queste foreste, oggi è classificato come Critically Endangered (CR) nella IUCN Red List. La perdita e la frammentazione dell’habitat stanno riducendo una popolazione già limitata a poche migliaia di individui.

Dietro ogni incontro c’è un cammino fatto di attesa, ascolto e fiducia. Passi lenti nella foresta, guidati da chi questo luogo lo conosce davvero.
 E poi uno sguardo che resta, molto oltre lo scatto. 🌿📸🐾

The diademed propithecus (Propithecus diadema) moves lightly through the trees of the rainforests of eastern Madagascar, with long, suspended leaps that seem to belong to another time.
Observing him like this, up close, is like entering for a moment into the fragile balance of this ecosystem. Endemic to these forests, it is now classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Habitat loss and fragmentation are reducing a population already limited to a few thousand individuals.

Behind every encounter is a journey of waiting, listening, and trust. Slow steps through the forest, guided by those who truly know this place.
And then a gaze that lingers, long after the shot. 🌿📸🐾

Ci sono foreste che non si attraversano soltanto. Si ascoltano. Il sentiero si stringe tra le foglie bagnate, l’aria diventa più densa e ogni passo rallenta il ritmo dei pensieri. Poi, quasi senza accorgertene, la foresta smette di essere solo paesaggio e diventa presenza.

Tra rami intrecciati e luce filtrata un camaleonte di Parson (Calumma parsonii) appare immobile, perfettamente parte del suo mondo. Nel cuore della foresta prima si osserva.

Nelle foreste dell’isola la natura non si mostra mai tutta insieme. Si lascia scoprire lentamente, tra suoni lontani, luce che filtra tra le foglie e movimenti appena percettibili. Poi, all’improvviso, uno sguardo emerge dal verde e il tempo sembra fermarsi per qualche istante.

Quello nella foto è un Indri (Indri indri), il più grande tra i lemuri e una delle specie più minacciate di estinzione. Vive esclusivamente nelle foreste del Madagascar e la sua sopravvivenza è strettamente legata alla conservazione di questi ambienti fragili e straordinari.

Momenti come questo raccontano la ricchezza unica di questi ecosistemi e il delicato equilibrio che li sostiene. Ogni incontro diventa parte di un viaggio fatto di attesa, osservazione e meraviglia. Questo scatto è il primo capitolo di un racconto che attraversa foreste tropicali, biodiversità endemica e incontri autentici con la natura selvaggia. In the island’s forests, nature never reveals itself all at once. It unfolds slowly through distant sounds, filtered light and barely visible movements. Then suddenly a gaze appears from the green, and time seems to stand still for a moment.

The subject in this image is an Indri (Indri indri), the largest living lemur and one of the most endangered species on the island. It lives exclusively in Madagascar’s forests, and its survival is deeply connected to the protection of these fragile ecosystems.

Encounters like this reflect the extraordinary richness of this environment and the delicate balance that sustains it. Each moment becomes part of a journey shaped by patience, observation and wonder. This image marks the first chapter of a visual story through tropical forests, endemic biodiversity and authentic wildlife experiences. In the coming posts, the journey will continue deeper into Madagascar’s wild nature.

Era di spalle. Questa spatola africana (Platalea alba) si è alzata in volo davanti a me, su uno dei laghi etiopici.

Le ali aperte hanno occupato tutto lo spazio, per un attimo. Non stavo aspettando quel momento. Stavo solo osservando.

Ho scattato perché qualcosa, in quel gesto, mi ha fatto fermare. A volte è questo che resta di un incontro. 🌿📸

-🇬🇧 It was from behind. This African spoonbill (Platalea alba) took flight in front of me, over one of the Ethiopian lakes.

The open wings took up all the space, for a moment. I wasn’t waiting for that moment. I was just observing.

I took the shot because something in that gesture made me stop. Sometimes that’s what remains of an encounter. 🌿📸

Questa foto faceva parte della serie “questa andava scartata”.

L’ho lasciata lì, ferma nell’hard disk. È stata scattata in Etiopia, sulle montagne di Debre Libanos. Un gruppo di gelada attraversava l’erba alta. 
Io ho scattato, senza pensarci troppo. A rivederla, non ho cercato di cambiarla, solo tolto il superfluo.  
In questo post ci sono due versioni. Quella com’era e quella che è rimasta. 🌿📸

-🇬🇧 This photo was part of the “this one should have been discarded” series.

I left it there, frozen on my hard drive. It was taken in Ethiopia, in the mountains of Debre Libanos. A herd of geladas was walking through the tall grass.

I took the shot, without thinking too much. Looking back at it, I didn’t try to change it, just removed the unnecessary.

There are two versions in this post. The one as it was and the one that remained. 🌿📸
